Check it out: Deal with the Devil is out now for Kindle!
That last bit is important, though: it’s out for Kindle only. That’s a temporary measure, but it’s one I felt I had to take to really test the Kindle Direct Publishing platform. On the advice of a friend who runs a micropress, I’m trying out Kindle Select for three months to see if it leads to greater or lesser sales in that market and if the big pot of money Amazon touts to authors actually gets dispersed in such a way as to make a difference to an incredibly small-time writer like me.
The plan at the moment is to have the paperback version ready to roll in the next couple of weeks and then, on April 2, push Deal with the Devil out to all the other major platforms via Smashwords. I do have at least one person who has pointedly asked me to make it available via iBooks sooner rather than later, and who am I to turn down a request from a fan?
In the meantime, if you have a Kindle and you’re a member of Kindle Prime, you can borrow rather than buy Deal with the Devil and I’ll still get a royalty payment. Win-win, right? Well, not for everyone else, but that’s part of the experiment: do I really have many readers who don’t already meet those conditions?
Feel free to let me know, either in comments, on Twitter or in email if you have opinions or experiences to share regarding Kindle vs. non-Kindle, Kindle Select vs. multi-platform or anything else.
In the meantime, I’ll be at Illogicon in Cary, NC, this coming weekend. Woot!
